Bridging the Gap
In 1991,
Bridging The Gap opened Kansas City’s first
volunteer-staffed recycling center. A year later, they
organized as a (501(©)(3) agency with the mission: To
encourage local and global understanding of our
interconnectedness and to develop this understanding
through community and education and action.
Bridging
The Gap soon became the coordinating hub for many
diverse environmental projects-from waste prevention to
environmental education, from recycling to picking up
liter and keeping Kansas City beautiful. Over the years,
they have become dubbed as “Kansas City’s local
environmental organization.”
Bridging the
Gap’s mantra is “connection,” We all live upstream and
downstream from someone else. We’re all in this
together and that’s how we work. Together, With
businesses, schools, governments, and you. With – and
for- community.

Buy Fresh, Buy Local is one more way Bridging The Gap
works to connect the environment, economy and the
community.
Buy Fresh, Buy Local Kansas City is a marketing
campaign to stimulate public awareness of quality foods
produced by local farmers. Its goal is to help
consumers identify the products of family farmers and
other local producers/processors in their area; help
local produces make their product stand out for
consumers, highlight support for local foods within the
marketplace and provide our community with information
about the many benefits of a strong local food system.
To
kick off the campaign, Bridging the Gap partnered with
Good Natured Family Farms and the locally owned and
operated Hen House Markets.

On
April 23, 2005, nearly 2,500 people turned out to a new
location to celebrate the 35th anniversary of
Earth Day with the first-ever regional Kansas City
Earthfest and the ninth Kansas City Earth Walk. With
fun as the focus, children and adults spent the day in
Shawnee Mission Park’s The Theatre in the Park enjoying
Earth-friendly exhibitors and live entertainment in the
April sunshine. More than 5000 dedicated walkers,
including more than 30 teams, braved chilly morning
temperatures and wind for the 2.6-mile walk to support
Bridging The Gap and environmental education in Kansas
City.
