Dr. Michael Boland, Professor of Agriculture Economics,
provides information to agribusinesses and cooperatives
for use in analyzing alternative managerial decisions.
This information is made available through a variety of
outlets including case studies, applied publications,
and scholarly journals.
Dr. Michael Boland assisted Good Natured Family Farms in
the very beginning in 1998. During the past seven
years, Dr. Boland and several of his graduate students
and extension assistants have helped in strategy and
marketing management. Dr. Boland has guided and
overseen the work of graduate students conducting
research with Good Natured Family Farms in various areas
of economic profitability and market analysis. This
research includes consumer surveys, data base mining,
electronic kiosk data collection and management, USDA
Process Verification Program (QSVP), cooperative
development between members of the supply chain, and the
economic assessment to value niche and quality
differentiated agriculture products.
The following students have conducted research under Dr.
Boland with the Good Natured Family Farm Program.
Dana Hoffman Dana was the first student to work
with GNFF and conducted research on electronic kiosk
data collection and management. Today, Dana is the
Member Programs Director for the Kansas Association of
Wheat Growers.
Christine Lusk Christine was the initial
student to work on the Process Verification Program.
Today, Christine is the Program Manager for the New
Ventures Team at Purdue University.
Dr. Laura Gow- Dr. Gow worked on assimilating the
ISO 9000 standards into the USDA Quality System
Verification Program and market analysis. Today, Dr.
Gow is an Assistant Professor, Oregon State University,
teaching courses in agriculture economics, marketing
management, and finance.
Lori Thielen- Lori worked under Dr. Boland as
both a graduate student and extension assistant, helping
the GNFF alliance in both research and application. Lori
continued and completed the USDA Quality System Process
Verification Program, conducted economic analysis,
consumer surveys, and communication strategies between
the supply chain members. Today, Lori is the Community
Development Specialist for the Kansas North Central
Regional Planning Commission.

Dr. Elizabeth Liz Boyle, Professor of Animal
Sciences and Industry, area of research emphasis is food
safety, meat science, product development, quality
assurance, risk communication/education, and
value-added. Dr. Boyle teaches graduate courses and
workshops and short courses in HACCP and process meats.
Dr. Boyle has directed two graduate students
conducting research for Good Natured Family Farms. The
research performed includes developing new value-added
products and product shelf life studies. The value
added products resulting from this research include
all-natural beef hot dogs and all-natural marinated
roast. Recently, Sarinya Pornaem completed her thesis
on Free-Range Chicken Shelf Life Study and Sensory
Evaluation.
Dr. Boyle is a great asset to the small meat
processing plants. From the initial implementation
mandate of HACCP to everyday operation application
questions, Dr. Boyle is the resource that assists small
meat processing plants like Good Natured Meat Processing
Plant in Uniontown, KS.

Dr. David Barton,
Professor Agriculture Economics and the
Director of the Arthur capper Cooperative Center. Dr.
Barton was instrumental in assisting the beef producers
in the formation of the All-Natural Beef Cooperative.
Today, the All-Natural Beef Cooperative consists of 24
local small family farms that provide beef to the Good
Natured Family Farms Alliance.
