Starting in August every year, Dan Kuhn, begins
his search for native, wild fruits. He’s done
this for several years and now knows friends and
neighbors who will help him in his search. They
gather elderberries, crab apples, wild plums and
choke cherries.
They process the fruits using an antique press,
cook the fruits in an open kettle and fill each
jar one at a time by hand. All of this
processing is done in the Cider Depot in
Courtland, Kansas.
The Depot was originally the Sante Fe-Rock
Island depot which was built in 1919. In 1989,
Dan purchased the building and moved it one mile
north of Courtland on US Highway 36. Today the
Cider Depot sells jellies, apple butters, syrups
made with their own recipes as well as other
Kansas specialties. |
